{"id":138,"date":"2012-03-22T17:47:25","date_gmt":"2012-03-22T04:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burn.co.nz\/blog\/?p=138"},"modified":"2012-08-17T13:41:15","modified_gmt":"2012-08-17T00:41:15","slug":"what-doesnt-kill-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/burn.co.nz\/blog\/?p=138","title":{"rendered":"What doesn&#8217;t kill you.."},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>It could have killed you<\/h2>\n<p>As a SysAdmin I am used to being around potentially dangerous situations like people working with high Voltage\/current <a title=\"Wikipedia - 3-phase electricity\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Three-phase_electric_power\">power feeds<\/a>, <a title=\"Best\/Worst Fire Suppression story ever\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/sysadmin\/comments\/qwd66\/projects_you_are_proud_of\/c410f0x\">fire suppression<\/a> systems, heights and dealing with <a title=\"APC Symettra PX UPS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apc.com\/products\/family\/index.cfm?id=182\">heavy<\/a> equipment. The cost of a mistake can be serious, and possibly fatal. However, these are all jobs where you need to hire a trained professional to do it.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of other hazards to deal with. I have had several computers burst into flames, dodgy wiring (230V has a bite..), and there was the time a Doberman try to attack me on a site visit. There are also the less exciting\/entertaining little cuts and bruises, tripping <a title=\"Wikipedia - Patch cables\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patch_cable\">hazards<\/a> and the ever present stress.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>But I don&#8217;t want to die!<\/h2>\n<p>Let face it, getting injured sucks and is usually pretty easy to avoid. So, what can you do? There are the obvious:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Suitable Fire Extinguishers and training for staff<\/li>\n<li>First Aid kits &#8211; they should be accessible in an emergency, not locked in a cupboard<\/li>\n<li>First Aid Training for everyone in your team &#8211; you are more likely to be working late or on weekends, and more often around hazards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And the things we know we should do, but never do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clean up as you go &#8211; it seems basic, but it is so easy to trip on something<\/li>\n<li>Keep pathways clear &#8211; don&#8217;t leave boxes in the way<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Wikipedia - Residual Current Device\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Residual-current_device\">RCD<\/a> power points on your workbench<\/li>\n<li>Use the proper tool &#8211; don&#8217;t open boxes with a 9&#8243; Rambo knife<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t do stupid crap &#8211; No, really, we both know it&#8217;s dangerous<\/li>\n<li>Leave things in a safe state &#8211; put that floor tile back when you go for lunch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Elephant in the room<\/h2>\n<p>The big, silent danger in every IT team I have worked with is stress. In the short term stress is normal, and can be healthy. Long term stress however takes a toll on your health, your relationships, and can lead to burnout. <a title=\"Standalone Sysadmin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.standalone-sysadmin.com\">Matt Simmons<\/a> (<a title=\"Twitter - standaloneSA\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/standaloneSA\">@standaloneSA<\/a>) has written some great SysAdmin specific pieces on <a title=\"Standalone Sysadmin - Burnout and the toll it takes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.standalone-sysadmin.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/flashback-burnout-and-the-toll-it-takes\/\">Burnout<\/a> and <a title=\"Manage Stress Before it Kills You\" href=\"http:\/\/www.simple-talk.com\/sysadmin\/general\/manage-stress-before-it-kills-you-\/\">Managing Stress Before it Kills You<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Well that was a downer<\/h2>\n<p>This hasn&#8217;t been an exhaustive list of hazards we deal with in IT, but it should get you thinking and be a start. Work with your team and find solutions to prevent hazards you may have experienced. Use the opportunity to re-think your workspace and how you can make it better.<\/p>\n<p>I know reading about work place safety isn&#8217;t the most exciting topic. Well done for making it this far.
